YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE DESIGNED WHAT THE CLIENT NEEDS

Brittany Fong always brings a rough sketch of a dashboard to an initial meeting!  A sketch with pencil and paper or white board helps the customer understand the user flow and how they will interact with the end product. (6:54).

While a sketch is not the finished product, without a starting design, you may create pieces that don’t work together. Follow Brittany’s recommendations on creating a great deliverable:

KEY POINTS

  • Having a design before building makes the process seamless and delivers a better final product. (2:30)
  • If you present a product to a client that looks ready or complete, the client usually hesitates to speak up. A rough draft encourages feedback and helps you understand their needs. (8:50)
  • Sometimes you have to offer 2 solutions to a client – the one the client wants and one you think may work better. (12:00)
  • Critical thinking is important to the design process. It allows you to compartmentalize and plan out the steps. Critical thinking is what allows you to build a solution that will work. (20:00)
  • If you find yourself having to thoroughly explain every feature of your design, you might not have designed what the client needs. (25:30)
